PASSAGES

From the outset, Passages makes no qualms about its troubling lead character Tomas (Franz Rogowski), a self-centered filmmaker who could not possibly care less about the feelings of his unknowing husband, Martin (Ben Whishaw). Over the course of its runtime, the Paris-set drama follows Tomas as he engages in a random affair with a young woman, whilst Martin has an affair with another man. The movie is a deeply horny but predictable film wherein no one cares about the other’s feelings, and we are somehow expected to sympathize with either party. Tomas, lisp and feminine swagger intact, was a character I absolutely abhorred by the time Passages headed towards its underwhelming climax. Aside from the explicit sex scenes (which include an interesting angle for a fingering-session), cinematographer Josee Deshaies does a fantastic job lingering on closeups and capturing Parisian life. What a shame, then, that the rest of the film feels so hollow.
